The question of whether you can mix tyre brands comes up regularly, often from drivers who have had one tyre damaged and want to replace just that one with whatever is cheapest. The legal answer is: technically you can mix brands in the UK, but there are important safety caveats.
The absolute rules are: you must never mix tyre types on the same axle (e.g., never put a summer tyre on the left and a winter tyre on the right). Both tyres on the same axle should be the same size, construction type (radial), and ideally the same speed and load rating.
Mixing brands on the same axle is legal but not recommended. Different brands have different rubber compounds, tread patterns, and grip characteristics. In normal driving, this difference is barely noticeable. But in an emergency stop or sudden swerve, the different grip levels can cause the car to pull to one side unpredictably — precisely when you need stable, predictable behaviour.
The safest approach is to always fit the same brand, pattern, and specification on both tyres of the same axle. If you need to replace just one tyre, try to match the existing tyre as closely as possible. Our mobile fitters can often source an exact match or a very close equivalent.
If budget is a concern, it is better to fit the same budget tyre on both sides of an axle than to mix a budget tyre with an old premium one. Consistency matters more than brand.
If you are unsure what to fit, call us. Our fitters will inspect your existing tyres, advise on the best match, and fit the replacement on the spot — keeping your car balanced and safe.
